SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.
EAST COAST SHAKEN. DAMAGE IX STORES. MANY CHIMNEYS CRACKED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORXE, this day. Ruatorea reports a fairly severe earthquake at 1.5 D p.m. yesterday. The shock caused a good many breakages in stores and houses. About two hours afterwards a severe 'quake took piace, doing considerable damage in the district. A number of chimneys were cracked, and some severely damaged. so much so that many residents are afraid to light fires. This shock did more damage at the stores. Huge rocks were seen falling from the mountains up Tapuaroa Valley, raising clouds of dust. A number of tremoun and slight earthquakes were felt between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Ruatorea is 82 miles distant from Gisbornc and five miles from Tuparoa, a coastal port near East Cape.
