AUSTRALIAN JAMS.

■MODIFICATION OF N.Z. EMBARGO. MELBOURNE, August 24. In connection with the prohibition of the importation into New Zealand of Australian jam, representations were recently made to the Dominion, askin? that the embargo might be modified ti the extent of permitting the importation of iam from Aueralia for which contracts had been made prior to the date of the proclamation. A reply was received to the effect that the only reason for the prohibition J was that the Commonwealth Governi ment had agreed tc allow Australian J exporters a rebate of £20 per ton on sugar used in jam for export. That concession would enable production and exportation to an extent which would destroy the New Zealand fruit and jam industry. The Dominion Government will, however, permit the importation into New Zealand of jam manufactured before the date on which the coneeeeioi ac to the rebate of £20 pi-r ton on sugar came into operation, provided a contract i* satisfactorily proved to have been made in respect of such jam by a Now Zealand importer. The date of concession is .Tune "27, 1021. The modification made by the j Dominion Government will not apply to j any jam with regard to which the "conceseion is claimed.
