THE GAMBLING CRAZE.
» BETTING ON LEAGUE MATCHES i WAGERS AT CARLAW PARK. j OFFICIAL ACTION TO BE TAKEN, j Last night the Management Commit- j tec of the Auckland Rugby Football League decided to take action to suppress betting in any form at Cariaw Park. This was done as a consequence . of a letter which the committee received from a supporter of the code, drawing attention to the groat amount of gam- j bling that was in evidence at the park j last .Saturday. ; The supporter stated in his letter that, large numbers of players were as.-embled outside the dressing rooms, and bets were being laid quite freely i and openly. Before the game began he noticed that the players were mixing quite freely with the betting fraternity, j and the space outside the dressing rooms reminded the writer of a race- j course "tote" enclosure upon a small scale. He suggested that the League j should get the assistance of the police j to suppress this practice of betting on j the park. Several speakers supported the state- I ments made in the letter, saying that ! the betting was carried on quite openly,; anti anybody who was interested in the j mat ler could see it for themselves. They i urged that action should be taken to suppress the practice, and the meeting, after discussion, decided to do so.
