NEW HEBRIDES CONTROL

CONDOMINIUM'S FAILURE. -PROPOSAL BY MR. HUGHES. LONDON, July o. The New Hebrides question is now commanding great attention. Mr -W. M. Hughes openly supports the proposal that the British and French Governments should arrange an understanding whereby the condominium shall be abolished, control of the islands passing to either Britain or Australia. Mr. Hughes is pressing Australian claims. One proposal is that France should surrender her claim to the islands in consideration for writing off a portion of her debt to Britain. The position is complicated by recent efforts of the French to promote immigration, but it is considered that there arc favourable prospects of a settlement on terms acceptable to all parties. Reference is also made to the hampering of the development of the islands by irregular shipping. It is certain that the condominium will go.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
