'DIPHTHERIA HEADS THE LIST.

The number of cases of infectious diseases reported to the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. T. J. Hughes) for the month of June totalled 192, which was a reduction of 17 on the total for MayDiphtheria accounts for 64 cases, as compared with 74 for the month of May. and of these 37 occurred in country districts, 16 in the city, and 11 in the suburbs. Scarlet fever, with a total of 44, varied little from the May figures, but the distribution was a big diversion from anything reported for the last half-year, more than half the total occurring in the country, and only 6 in the city, as against 15 for May.

Pneumonia numbered 42 cases, 23 in "the country, and 10 in both the city and suburbs. Tuberculosis came next, with a total of 12 cases, five in the suburbs, four in the city, and three in the country districts. There were eight cases of enteric fever, a reduction of seven, five being in fhe country districts and three in the suburbs. In-fluenza-pneumonia numbered six cases, three in both the city and the country; chicken pox five, 3 in'the country, two in the city and suburbs; puerperal septicaemia five, two in the suburbs an* also in country districts and one in the suburbs. Four cases of erysipelas occurred, two in the country, and'one in both the city and suburbs. Lethargic encephalitis and hydatids accounted for one case each, being- in the suburbs and the country respectively.
