THE LEAGUE GAMES.

GOOD PLAY ON CAKUW PARK.

MARIST OVERWHELMS NEWTON.

POXSOXBY IS, SHORE 11,

MARITIME BEATS FIRE BRIGADE.

There were perhaps 3.700 spectators to the game between Marist and Newton on Carlawt Park on .Saturday, and those who missed the first spell lost something that was really worm wniiu, although the condition of the ground, greased by several hard showers, was a contributory factor to the scrappines3 of the play during the last quarter of an hour. The play during the first part of the second spell was very good, and if an occa3iona.' shower had not come along just then to make the ground and ball slippery, the contest, although going in favour of the Tykea by virtue of their better combine! play, tbe garuc is ght p isgibly have been fought out to a more interesting issue. Although Na-rton score! the first try, thai nroved tv b-; the only one registered upon their score-sheet, and the boys wearu'S -he green and gold we-o not," long in sev. ing enough points to pat them ahead. The spell ended well in favour of the lyiss, and after the in-aval, despite powerful atta-ka that wer> oc-nsionally delivered without the team-work to bring them It- h si <c. ssful issu?, Newton wn< unable to sere again, and the Jykoa ran tin score up to 34 points 1.-o ~rt the ,?ame ended.

There was an interesting game between Ponsonby and North Shore on the Devonport Domain. Shore were able to put out a fairly strong team, and as their opponents were in a similar position the standard of play was quite good, and, indeed, better than has been witnessed at any other game played at Devonport this season. Ponsonby were leadin" at half-time by 8 points to 6, and ran up the figures'to IS-tl at the final.

Maritime had more difficulty than many spectators expected in beating Fire Brigade, for the' firemen made good work and were beaten after an interesting game by 24 to 6.

The position of the teams in the compe "tition is as follows:—

Fire Brigade played a hard but unavailing game against Maritme on the Domain on Saturday. The tri-colour attacked most of the time, but frequently the whites made desperate rally, and they defended with determination throughout. Never deterred in their efforts by the fact that they were up against a superior team, the firemen well deserved the eulogies of their fine sportsmanship at the conelnslon of the gome, when the scores stood : Maritime 24, Fire Brigade 6.
