COUNTING UP CRIME.
YEAH'S RECORD FOR DOMINION. During 1920, 43,491 persons, who were either arrested or summoned, were brought before the Magistrate's Courts in the Dominion. Of these 16,105 were arrested and 27,386 brought before the Court on summons. The female offenders totalled 2399, and the males 41.09. The details are pxiblished in this week's "Gazette," which points out that for the purpose of reckoning each offence has been set down as a distinct person. The cases were disposed of as follow: —Discharged for want of prosecution or want of evidence, 3594; dismissed on merits, 2346; admonished and discharged, 82.>; committed for sentence, 719; committed for trial, 530; summarily convicted, 33,550 (males), 1937 (females). CONVICTIONS CLASSIFIED. The classification of summary convictions sets out that 747 were convicted of assaults and other offences against the person, 109 on the score of burglary, robbery, stealing from the person, and kindred offences, 3509 for theft and other offences against property only, and 203 for forgery and offences again-t currency. For drunkenness convictions were entered against 8374 men and 519 women, while 1567 men and 106 women were made the subject of prohibition orders. Other offences against "good order" numbered SIS 3. Under the Revenue Acts 73 persons were convicted of selling liquor without a license, and 118 for other breaches. A total of 12.311 convictions were sustained on the score of offences relating to '"carrying out laws and against public welfare." Excluding multiple charges and not reckoning each offence a-s a distinct person, a total of 37.15S persons were brought before the Lower Courts in tne Dominion, ot" whom 31.026 (including 170S females! were summarily convicted.
