I Ministers are always averse to letting it be known that the (.iovernnvnt icontemplating making appointment- !l> the Legislative Council, for the reason that New Zealand contain- liseraliy hundreds of citizens hungering to -.Tve their country in that elevated sphere. However, the secret is out--the llovcru- ; merit during the short ro-p-- intend- to i appoint a further batch of Councillor*. A report was recently circulated that the Government intended appointing Sir James Carroll to the * oun.il at the same time as Sir Thomas Mackenzie. Events proved it to be im-orrert. but it is simply premature. I have it on the best of authority thai the popular , "Ariki,' as he is known to members, will be on the next list. His appointment will be welcomed in many quarters, I because the legislature is at pre-ent I rather weak in authorities on Maori questions. .Sir William Herries and the Hon. A. T. Xgata are regarded as outstanding in this sphere, bo that the presence of Sir -lames Carroll in the Coun- ! cil will be of real value in the way of securing adequate knowledge of the Maori point of view and the proper ■ expression of it.
