PAYMENT BY RESULTS.
WELSH OBJECTIONS. LONDON, September 30. The coal conference has ended in a deadlock. Tlie parties .have issued a statement to the effect that after a long discussion the mineowners submitted a scheme for further regulation of wages hased on output, which, after full consideration, the miners' representatives refused. The latter submitted proposals for the present and future regulation of wages in relation to output, which, after full consideration, the mineowners' representatives refused. The parties are reporting separately to the Government. The South Wales Miners' Federation has all along insisted on an immediate advance of wages. Moreover, the Welsh miners are strongly antagonistic to any settlement on a basis of payment by results, unless endorsed by the general body of miners. A special conference at Cardiff endorsed this attitude to-day. li Some light is thrown on the miners' standpoint if a statement made by Mr. John Cairns, M.P., to the Stockburn miners is credible. He predicts an ' early movement for a reduction of the miners' working hours to six daily. By a subsequent arrangement . the miners saw the Prime Minister. Tho first meeting lasted one hour and threequarters, after which Mr. Hodges, M.P., made a statement to the effect that the Prime Minister urged a further meeting with the mineowners with a view to agreeing in regard to a datum line. Tlie miners renlied that they concluded that no further good would accrue therefrom. They have to report to to-morrow's conference of miners' delegates.—(Reuter.) ANOTHER POSTPONEMENT. (Becclved 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 30. ; The Central News Agency says that it is probable that the miners' executive will postpone the strike notices another week, pending further discussions with the owners respecting the.datum line.— (A. and N.Z. -Cable.) =
