Charged that he struck Charles (Davis, «. taxi driver, who was endeavouring to obtain his fare, a native, Joe Hawiri, was sentenced to-day to a month's imprisonment in Mount Eden gaol. Col. H. R. Ryder and Mr. I W. Jeffery were the justices. In giving evidence accused stated he was a returned •jldier, and had been mentioned in dispatches. However, Constable Doyle, on looking up records found the only "mention" was a sentence of .fix month's military detention. The court was literally thronged with Maori, who objected to the sentence.
