AGE OF THE EARTH.
NEW THEORY ADVANCED. SUN'S SUB-ATOMIC HEAT. (Hy Cable.—Tress Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, August 27. At the meeting of the British Association, the most outstanding declaration was a statement by Professor A. S. l-'ddington (president of the physical section) that the sun can maintain its output of heat for fifteen billion years. Tliis estimate is based on the contention that sun-stars do not depend for their iheat upon contraction, according to the theories of yon Ilelmhollz and Kelvin, but upon some vast reservoir of subatomic energy. Professor Eddington declared that the sun must date back to a time so remote that there was no limit to estimates of the age of the earth. — ("Times.")
