THREE DEATHS IN DUNDALK. FIERCE RIOTS IN BELFAST. MACHINE GUNS TURNED ON TEOWD. (By Cable—Press Association—Copy rig-lit.) (Keccived 11 a.m.) LONDON, August 27. The entire business section of Dundalk, County Louth, 45 miles north of Dublin, was destroyed by lire. It is alleged that the fires were started by Sinn i'ciners as a reprisal for the burning of Catholic property in lielfast and Lisburn by Unionists. Three were burned to death. Fierce rioting between rival mobs occurred in the Ballymacarrett district of Belfast. Revolvers were used, and there was much looting, until the military dispersed the crowds with machine guns. The ferment in Newtonards, six miles east of Belfast, on Wednesday afternoon, was confined principally to stone-throw-ing between the rival factions. Energetic military precautions were taken, troops and Lewis guns being stationed at strategic points and wire entanglements erected. .Serious rioting began after midnight, the troops being compelled to lire. One rioter was kill-id, 20 wounded, and 30 arrested. Forty incendiary lires were started in private houses, spirit stores, and groceries several being destroyed. Ten arrests were made nt Queenstown ill connection with the shooting of the Cameron Highlanders. Ten thousand people made demonstrations outside lirixton prison, where -Mr. McSwceney (Lord .Mayor of Cork) is confined, to-night. Wild scenes were enacted, numerous baton charges being made by mounted and foot police, whom tho Sinn Fein crowd stoned, injuring several policemen. .Many of the demonstrators were injured during the [Milicc rushes and the stampede of the crowd which followed. The sister of the Lord Mayor of Cork has replied to Mr. Lloyd (Jeorgo'3 letter stating that she did not appeal for exceptional treatment for her brother. She adds: "I warned you of your responsibility for his death, if my brother or any of his comrades must" die to win freedom they will do so willingly. Wo arc proud of them, but their death lies :on you and the Government. The selfI determination for which you say Kn"I land went to war is as much Ireland.", right as Poland's. We will have it, even if you have decided that my brother must die." Sir Hamar Greenwood (Chief Secretary for Ireland) has gone to Lucerne to confer with the Premier.
