CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE,
At last night's meeting of rhe City '.Schools Committee (Mr. li. rardiugton It the chair) the resignation of .Mr. W. .1. (iatenby. llrst assistant ot 'P.eresford Street, was received, and It was decided to wish him every success in his new profession— the law. Mr. Oscar Meßryne. the secretary, was granted leave of absence for three months, to enable him to visit Australia. Better Schools Wanted.-There was a good denl of discussion concerning the state of the city schools, all of which were recently visited by the Committee, anil It was decided to again approach the Kdu'-a-■lion Hoard and point out the urgent necessity for bettor school buildings anil larger playgrounds. The reso'.ifiion declared the presHit conditions to he ''a menace to the health of the children and teachers and a disgrace to civilisation." It was also decided to seed copies of the resolution to the Minister of Education and the Anefemeeting will be held next Tuesday to formulate the demands of the co mm'ittee to be presented to the F.dwatlmi Board.
