It is reported that Archbishop Stanley, doyen of the English-speaking prelates in Rome, wa3 invited to celebrate mass at the beatification of Oliver Plunkett, but the Irish bishops remonstrated against the choice of an Englishman, and an Italian was selected. Archbishop Michael Kelly, of Sydney, was present at the beatification. —(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
Oliver Plunkett, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, was hanged at Tyburn in 1681 for treason. It has been" asserted by Irish historians ever since that his life was sworn away by 'paid informers, and the desire for his canonisation has been keenly -urged byIrishmen. *
