LONDONDERRY RIOTS.

L&HCER frATROLS OUT. LONDON, May 17. The rioting in Londonderry lasted until the early morning. Troop.s were i called out and separated the two fac-1 tions. nicy drew cordons round the ; troubled areas and conducted a sys- j temiitic search for arms. The violence gradually subsided. Firearms were used with alarming frequency by both sides, and there were many casualties. Three deaths have been reported, and others: were seriously wounded. Largo quantities of barbed wire are arriving in Ireland. It is believed that this is connected with new military preparations and the inauguration of a blockhouse system. Lancei- patrols are now employed in the west and south to prevent cattledriving. Considerable areas in the west and south are subjected to the so-called ! Sinn Fein courts, which p.re arresting, trying, and sentencing offenders for crimes in increasing numbers. Sinn Fein hunger-strikers who- were released from Wormwood Scrubs and | sent to a large London hospital, became i. indignant because of a temporary food , shortage at the mid-day meal. They

quitted the hospital in a body, after reducing the nurses to tears at their unreasonableness. They have not yet returned. The authorities of the hospital say that they have no power to compel the nri«onei'B to nt"v if t.hov are dissatisfied.—(A. and N.Z. Carjle.)
