REFUSAL TO TESTIFY.
GIRL PRISONER'S PRJVILiBGE. (By TeJejraj*.—Press Aamctttlon.) DUKEDISC, Wednesday. In tlie Supreme Court to-day Gladys Batchelor was charged with ''counselling or procuring" Jame-> Reynolds Hayne to commit a crime; al=o, with "conspiring" and turner with "permitting." The Crown Prosecutor said that the girl had refused to give evidence, and in 'th»t refusal she wa s technically right, since by giving >cv' lence against others rfhe would !>e incriminating herself. It wae :n order that she might be made to speak as to what had happened, tihat she was now prosecuted. The jury' returned a verdict of guilty on tl}e third count only. The Judg* l sentenced the accused to imprisonment trll tlie rising of the Court, which ro«e- five seconds afterwards.
