m ■ PRISONERS SENTENCED. THREE MAORI DELINQUENTS, i Three Maoris were sentenced at the Supreme Court this morning by Mr. r ustke Sim. Wiremu Rana, aged 24, vas convicted of the theft of a bicycle X Tauranga. He k a returned soldier, md the police have suspicion .that his ntellect is not too strong. Whitu Tauri. another young native, vho pleaded with no title eloquence for irobation, was up for theft of a wricstct watch and opal ring, the property of Javid Silk, Auckland. The Court reused probation, after hearing about his nilitary and civil career when he was in vVellington. and ordered a three year*;' ,erm of reformative treatment. The third native bore the name of rainui Ngakai. aged '27, and his lapse was forgery and uttering at Waitaka.■uru, four charges. The Crown Prosecutor (the Hon. J. A. Tole) said the •rime was a mean one, the accused having operated on the bank account of a nan staying in the same house. During :he last twelve months he had spent over £140 in drink. A year's imprisonment, with detention for not more than four years, was the verdict of the Court. Martyn P. Heirunens, sent up from Tauranga on a. charge of carnal knowledge, was described by the Crown Prosecutor as a married man with a wife and six children. The Court imposed a sentence of three years with hard labour.
