THE PROPOSED NEW COUNTY.

.To Mc Editor.) Sir.- —In a recent issue of your paper' there .appeared a report of a movement in favour of dividing the Waitemata county into two. The ridings of Birkenliead, Takapuna, Pukeatua, Wainui and Kaukapakapa to be formed into a newcounty. This is a most important and essential reform, and the sooner it is brought about the better. The ivav in which the needs of the districts on the north side of the harbour have been treated is a scandal and a disgrace. Wherever one goes in this riding (Pukeatixa) one will find plenty of evidence of neglect on the part of "the Waitemata County Council and its officials. Thousands and thousands of pounds have been spent here, with very little benefit to the ratepayers. I am sure that in all 2sew Zealand, from the North Cape to the Bluff, there is no district where there has been greater mismanagement in county administration. The time is ripe for the five ridings mentioned above to be formed into a new county. with the harbour as the boundary. "With their own Council and officials" these districts could have their needs attended to at once, and in a sensible and energetic fashion. This they can never hope for co long as they remain part of the Waitemata county. Let the ratepayers of Birkenhead, Takapuna, Pukeatua, Wainui and Kaukapakapa determine for themselves whether they wish to remain ■part of the Waitemata county, or whether they wish to form a new countsand look after their own affairs.—l am, etc, J. DOCHEKTY. Dairy Flat.
