AUCKLAND GROWN TOBACCO.

A VERY FAVOURABLE REPORT. Some time ago reference wae made in the "Auckland Star" to excellent tobacco leaf grown by Air. Joseph Franich at Henderson. That gentleman used to grow tobacco in Dalmatia before coming to New Zealand 2G yeans ago. Mr. Franich considering that tobacco growing could be adopted with profit by returned soldiers who wore going in for fruitgrowing, forwarded samples of leaf to the Government. The Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, Dr. C. J. Reakes, hae now written to Mr. Joseph Franich, of "Boyana" Vineyards, Henderson, stating that the samples of tobacco leaf left at the office, Wellington, were submitted to the local representatives of the British Empire Trading Co., Ltd., but as it was considered a better opinion regarding their value could be obtained from Australia, they were sent over for examination. The following ie the report of the experts: — "Wβ think Mr. Franich is to be congratulated on producing a very fair sample of leaf of decidedly Turkish type, and if he or others could get a little more colour it would, we think, command quite a ready sale at remunerative prices. We have no hesitation in eaying that in our opinion this is amongst the best specimens of this class al leaf grown in the Southern Hemisphere that hae come under our notice, and we shall be interested in hearing from you what progress Mr. Franich makes, and what success he meets with in future crops. If there is any further information we can give you we shall be happy to do what we can, and in conclusion will cay that there is -every indication that Mr. Franich is on the right track."

Dr. Reakes adds that he would be glad to have further samples of leaf for diepatch to America, where he thinks it might be possible a good market might be found for this leaf, which evidently is somewhat, of a Turkish type. It would appear that leaf of this type would be likely to find a better market in the United States than elsewhere. -
