LABOURER OR ENGINEDRIVER
In the. Court yesterday, before Mr. Poyaton, SjM., the Auckland Local Bodies Labourers' Union s-ued one P. Nicholson for arrears of subscriptions to the union. Defendant claimed that he was exempt from liability because he was not a labourer -within, the weaning of the term labourer used in the rules. He admitted that ho had been a member of the union 6ince the middle of 1010, but he claimed that he had been made a •member under protest, and continued so under protest. As the leading hand in the City destructor and the holder of an engine-driver's certificate, lie contended that he did not come within the membership of the union. The magistrate held that, having joined the union and continued memberehip since 191ti, defendant was bound to pay the subscriptions. It might be an open point as to whether or not he was a labourer within the meaning of the rulea. but the defence was not open to him. -Judgment for plaintiff.
