The next census in Australia is to be taken in April, 1921. The taking of a census involves a great deal of preparatory work, and already the preliminary details are being worked out. Since the last census was taken in 11)11 the population of the Commonwealth has not increased to any great extent. It is doubtful whether there are 1,000.000 more people living in Australia to-day than there were ten years ago. Some of the other Dominions have been pushing ahead at a great pace. Canada has now passed the" 9,000,000 mark, as against Australia's 5,000,000 of population. When Mr. Knibbs, the Commonwealth Statistil cian, goes to London, he will inspect a i variety of new census-taking machines ' that have (been invented for the purpose !of classifying the returns by an automatic and strictly accurate process. It is claimed that the use of such machines at the next census would result in a leaving of at least £10 : 000 to the Com[monw earth.
