j CONFERENCE SITTING IN COMMITTEE. Colonel W. Holgate, who has been attending the Conference of Coalmine Owners and Coal Miners, returned by the Pateena on Saturday. In conversation with a representative of the Auckland " Star " who asked his views upon the position at present and prospects for a satisfactory setttlement, Colonel Holgate said: "As the conference has only adjourned it is impossible for mc to make any statement. I will, however, say that I am very doubtful as to any permanent settlement arrived at." Col. Holgate explained that as the committee of the conference is now sitting, he came to Auckland, but will return later to Wellington if his presence is required.
