EMBARGO ON HIDES.
EFFECT OF THE REGULATIONS. IMMENSE PROFITS TO FEW, (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DTJNEDM, Thursday. The embargo on the export of hides and skins was severely criticised to-day by a business man, who asserted that the effect oi the Government regulations was to put immense profits into the pockets of a few at the expense of the many. The Government's scheduled list of priced, he said, eliminated all competition, the tanners taking what they wanted and leaving the poorer classes on the agents' hands. When "rejects" were offered at auction they realised more for export than the tanners paid for the best. 'He complained that while leather was from 1/ to 1/1 per lb higher than at the 'beginning of the war the vendor of hides was getting only lid to 2Jd per lb more.
