THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. UNIVERSITY NOW LEADING. COLLEGE RIFLES DEFEATED. WINS FOR SOMERVELL, ARETA, AND MT. EDEN. The most important and interesting game at Remuera on Saturday was that between College Rifles and University, who had only one point between, them at the head of the senior competition. The match was -watched by a. large and enthusiastic crowd, and proved a really good display of the stick game. University came out the better by four goals to one, and thus displaced their opponents at the head of the list. On the adjoining ground Mount Eden beat Training College by five goals to three, while Areta defeated Edeudale hy six to nil, and Somervell accounted for Ponsonby by one to nil. St. Luke's took a bye. The positions of the teams now are: University 19 points, College Rifles 18, Mount Eden 15, St. Luke's 13, Somervell 12, Ponsonhy S, Areta 8, Training College 6, Edendale 5. UNIVERSITY V. COLLEGE RIFLES. University defended the mountain goal with the sun at their backs, and were the first to move off, but College soon changed the scene of operations to midlleld. An exchange of hits between 1 Preston and Clayton terminated in the College van sending the ball across the line. From the resultant 'Play University conceded a corner, W. University initiated iin attack from ttie bully, but College were again across the dividing line. Garland and Alilers shifted a dangerous rush and play reached the College corner flag; a straggling rush by the College was countered by Rcnnle, and University were again on the attack, and from a Toose rush play reached the circle, Carr evening up the scores. College continued the onslaught and Garland cleverly saved. Some short hitting by the University backs enabled Grlce to break away nnd, centring, the van bombarded the College goal. Carr brought off the desired result. WaddinslKim made a couple of further onslaughts on the College citadel, which Slomau eventually stopped with a big hit. A couple of hits by Preston gave Garrard an opening, and Iris centre resulted In a corner. Just before half time a fierce attack was just stopped by Bartleet kicking clear, and Speight nlso accounted for a hot shot. Fletcher brought away from the bully, but Garland replied with n big hit. and Wnddinshnni and Hnrman took play Into the College twenty-five. A free hit close to the line was checked by Clayton, but Balldon gained possession, and sent out at half-way. Grice. who was frequently a dangerous factor on the students' right, .returned the leather. Tho ball came across to Waddingham. who made a juggling run, and sent in a clever shot. College attacked, and reached the students' territory, but only secured a twenty-five, where University were subjected to some hot work. A lot of close stick work ensued. Carr broke nwny cleverly, and pent on to Waddingham, who came in front of Sloraan, but a moment later beat the College full-back and centred. A Rood run by Harland was stopped by rßartleet. and University adv-anced to halfway. 'Harman made a Rood opening, arid was well supported by Eton. It terminated in College conceding a corner. A lot of give and take play followed, both teams taking turns in the attack. A couple of runs along the right by Grlce terminated in, a capital shot reaching the net. 'Shortlr afterwards time was called, -with the ball in University twenty-flve. University 4 College Rifles . .. 51 iMr. J. K. Henderson was referee. EDENDALE V. ARETA. Edendale won the bully, but their opponents got charge, aud a run by Nicholson made some critical moments in the Edendale circle, Bicketts doing come smart work in the defensive. Sparkee led a counter-attack, and quickly reached the circle, where he was checked, tout afterwards tried a shot, which rose OTer the net. Areta now pressed hard and repeatedly, but without success, until Westwood, taking a pass on the circle boundary, cent in a long shot which beat the goalkeeper. A coun-ter-attack proved very brief, and tney settled down again round Areta's circle. One rather slow shot was stopped by the Areta goalkeeper, and after a corner Nloholson let fly from come distance oht, the ball striking a player and landing high up In the net. Areta still kept the upper hand, and the ball was in their opponents* twenty-flve for some time, though nobodjgot an opportunity to shoot. When nlay resumed Areta rusJied the ball down field aud a. corner ensued. Monteith led a counter-rush down the line. This was turned back, and White, West wood and Nicholson again made things rather lively in the Edendale circle, Rlcketts and other Edendale backs made several attempts to clear, and several times got the ball out to the twenty-flve, but the opposing, halves cent it back again, and at length Westwood got a shot in from the left flank. After a spell of very open play the blacks got into the circle again, and a couple of shots nearly •got in. The ball went to midfleld, and then a rush ended in Nicholson breaking through and pushing the 'ball into goal. More attack ended iv Cooper just missing a shot, but in the same minute Bishop, who was within shooting range, whacked the ball through his own forwards and fonnd the net. Jansen and Davis made an Incursion into lAreta territory from half-way, and it looked as if Areta s progress might be checked a little. The ball, however, travelled back again, and Fellows had to stop a hot shot by Nicholson. Mohteith led the Edendale forwards In a good rush downfleld, but were held up by Englena. Areta attacked again, and a few minutes later a penalty bully was given against one of the Edendale backs, with the result that Cooper scored Areta's last goal. The game ended— Areta 6 Edendale 0 Mr. L. H. Norton was referee. TRAINING COLLEGE V. MT.- EDEN. Mount Eden won the bully, but were sent back by the College half line, the retirement being to the twenty-five mark. Mount Eden got on the move again, however, and the pressure on the Training College defence became so severe that thelr~goal was continuously in danger for several minntes. Off-side play by one of the Mount Eden team gave relief to the defenders ana the ball went over the half-way mark. Mackren, Scherer and Matheson raced for the opposite g«al, and sweeping through tlie defence, "which was somewhat demoralised by the swiftness of the attnek, the? reached the circle and 'Mackren scored. Almost from the bully the Mount Eden van took charge, springing a similar surprise on their opponents, and the whistle sounded for the equalising score, while some of the players were still standing in their places at the bully-off. A few mimites later Mount Eden were in the College circle again, and Johns notched their second goal. Training College rallied and Invaded Mount Eden's ground, hut the tricky Eden forwards found an opening and quietly reversed the position. A sneeession of I lively tussles took place in the College circle, the goal-keeper doing some good work in keeping out the invaders.

Mount OEden resumed the attack when the game started again, but faulty hitting in the circle spoilt a good scoring chance, and Training College eeized an owning to hammer their way to the Eden. end. The College goal was now suttfected to a series of attacks, which made matters extremely interesting for the goal-keeper on several occasions. College followed with a strong assault, and then . Mount Eden played through the field with the help of a number of long cross-hits. A brief tussle took place from a penalty corner, and K. Rankiu .scored. A few minutes later Ranktu got past the goal-keeper with another one, bringing Mt. Eden's score up to four while the fifth was notched shortly afterwards by Johns. The game ended: Mount Eden B 'Staining College 3 Mr. R. H. Klllip was referee. PONSONBY V. SOMERVELL. The match between Somervell and Ponsonby was rather scratchy. The Wanganui hockey eleven journeyed to Hamilton to-day to play their challenge match with the Walkato representatives. Tlie match was played in Seddon Park before a fair crowd. L. Boyd captained Wnnganui and D. Hunter, Waikato. The game was fairly even, 'but was productive of no great play. If anything the Wanganui boys had the better of the game in stick work. The match ended in a draw, one goal each, Walkato, therefore, retaining the cup. The game was robbed of a good deal of interest from the spectators' point of view by too much whistle, trifling breaches and accidental off-side being taken over-notice of. A more elastic reading of the rules would nave given the game greater zest and bite. This was the first challenge match since the outbreak of war. Messrs Killlp and Fabling were the referees
