LOCAL STATE GOVERNORS.
PROPAGATING THE IDEA. LO.VDOX, July 10. The Victorian Treasurer, Mr. W, M. McPherson, interviewed Viscount Milner, Secretary of State for the Colonies, and conveyed a message from the State Premier as follows:—There exists in Victoria a strong and growing feeling, which the Government shares, thut in future instead of there being a Governor, the office might be occupied by an Lieutenant-Governor. Mr. McPherson eulogised the work of the present Governor, Sir A. L. Stanley, and particularly the services of Lady Stanley in connection with Red Cross activities, but suggested that the Imperial Government should not appoint a successor until the Victorian Government had had an opportunity of making further representations. Victoria considered that since the advent of the Commonwealth and the appointment of a Governor-General the question of the Britain was on a different basis. ,jLord Milner, replying, expressed the personal opinion that Lieutenant-Gover-nors would meet the needs of the State. He promised to await further representations before diking any steps.—(A. and X.Z. Cable.)
