BOXING.

The Northern Boxing Association has eeided to hold a carnival on July 28 at he Town Hall, under the patronage of he Auckland Returned Soldiers' Assoeiaion. to whom will be donated 50 per cent. if the net profits a_ a contribution towards their gymnasium and club rooms und. It is intended to hold an amateur tmrnament for all classes, viz., bantams, eather, light, welter, middle, and heavy reights, and entries close with the new ccretary, Mr. A. W. Gyllies, at the ■ports Club, His Majesty's Arcade, on uly 12, at 9 p.m. The X.B.A. committee has decided hat each competitor's entry must be ceo—lpanied by a medical certificate of itness to compete, and intending comietitors can be examined by the associaion's hon. medical officers, Drs. Sharpe, Irockway, and Murphy, during their conultation hours free of charge. The trophies will be medals valued at Co to winners, and of the value of two uineas to runners-up, whilst competitors rill be entitled to a refund of their ntrance fee by their appearance in the ing. It" is expected by the association that ;ood entries will be forthcoming for the arious classes, with a fair number of eturned soldier competitors, and alhough perhaps a number of the competiots will be making their first public ippeaiance it is confidently expected that . good standard of boxing will be witlessed, for it is rumoured that there are everal promising colts participating in .he sport in the various boxing academies iow in operation around Auckland. It is quite refreshing to be able to hronicle the revival of competitive boxng in Auckland after its lengthy enforced ecess, and this circumstance, added to he fact that the Returned Soldiers' Association will participate in any financial jenefit that should accrue, ought to msure a bumper house at the Town Hall >n the night in qnestion. 11. Johns, of Auckland, who was defeated by Len. Robinson (Gisborne) at Hastings last week for the featherweight championship of New Zealand, is not satisfied with the decision, and is endeavouring to have another meeting arranged, either at Hastings or Auckland. He claims that the referee interfered without justification when he had Robinson groggy in the fourth round, and that in the fifth round he was struck a foul blow on the groin which passed official notice, but which caused him 6uch -pain that he was unable to continue after battling out two more rounds. 'He carries the mark of a bruise on the groin which, if caused in the bout, would certainly corroborate his claim of a foul, whether accidental or otherwise. An endeavour will probably be made to arrange a return meeting of the lads in Auckland.
