PAY AND CONDITIONS. DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. I Yesterday a deputation representing part of the executive of the Public S<<fvice Association waited on the Minister for Justice, and laid before him a number of requests from the police officers. The Minister, in reply, said the following requests had been recommended for consideration: That a digest of the I Statutes with which police officers are required to have knowledge be compiled; that a definite system of examinations be laid down; that no questions be asked outside the scope of the syllabus, and that the police and detective duties in the examinations bo defined; that officers Who joined the police force prior to the institution of the examinations be permitted to take them in sections: i that the Government amend the Police Force Act to provide for tiie full right of appeal as granted to other members of the Public Service; that publication of all transfers and vacancies in various ofliccs and stations of the police force be ratified in the "Police Gazette"; that I constables on escort from one station to ' another be allowed leave to enable proper rest and sleep to be obtained, and not be compelled, as at present, to return by the first available train; when vacancies occur in out stations, due regard be paid to seniority when filling position; that where practicable one day's rest in seven be granted members of the police force; that the retiring age of all members of the force be compulsory at sixty and optional at fifty-five years; that the allowance of 1/ per day and granted to certain members of the force be made general; that allowances for tilling of ' higher duties be granted, lis jLn the case !of post and telegraph officers. , The Minister also said that the 6cale 'of travelling allowances was under consideration, and that an amendment of . the Police Force Act was under contemplation to secure full reinstatement , of men who had served with the Ex- , peditionary Forces.
