AUCKLAND RACING CLTJB. I THE GREAT NORTHERN WINTER MEETING. Tile proverbial good luck of the Auckland Racing Club remained with them over their lineetlnp, which came to an end yesterday, I the weather being perfect, the fields good, the course in excellent order, the racing I entertaining, and though there was a marked drop in the attendance as compared with the two previous days, it was still | larKe, with the speculating element as predomiuent as ever. The totalisator staff bandied £GB,RG4, bringing the investments jto £'JOj,S<SS for the three days, which Is an 'unprecedented return for a winter meeting, land one seldom reached at any seasou of I the year In Australasia, and never over a 'similar number of events at Ellerslle or In New Zealand. There was no falling off jin the ileitis, but the absence of Art, Euripos, l'araoa, Slelght-of-Hand, Southernowned Jumpers, and of Parisian Diamond, !tlie best welter horse that ran at the meetling, was commented upon. The lion. E. IMitchelsou and the committees working J with him, and the stewards are to be congratulated up.m Ihe successful conclusion ;of the season; Mr. Albert Hill, the earcj taker, and his staff on the good work they .jhave done on the club's estate: Mr. W. S. 'Speni-e, upon the continued success which j has been experienced during his term of office as secretary; aim Mr. <.'. O'Connor, ;for his work at the barrier throughout the season, which cannot be aceomplL-heil without very trying experiences, some of which are often of a character that the executive of the club should relieve him of, by refusing the nomination of really bad horses. The management at the total!Kators, despite the huge turnover, can still be improved by providing, not fur ordinary business, but for the possibility of abnormal business, per its medium. The duties of the stipendiary stewards wore light, as were those of the honorary ones, who held an inquiry into the trouble caused by Pac'.dlngtou Green at the barrier in the York , Welter, when that gelding, White Blaz.\ Killard. and Fabriquettc got caught in the , tapes, and had their chances extinguished. Another matter, the cliim of JlcSeveney, mo . jockey, for a losing mount through another horseman being given the mount on Arlington, was disallowed. Accidents were few, F. Tutchen, the rider of Waimai, receiving . slight concussion when that horse came down in the Winter Steeplechase at the last , fence. There were five runners for the Tamaki Steeplechase Handicap, with which the business of the day commenced. Lister ■being made a better favourite than No Surrender, Grafton Tot anil the others. Jaearanda took charge and led to the top of the hill the first time and on to the flat over the sod wall, and around the back, and up the hill the second time, nnd going over the double there Ulster, Jaearanda and N o Surrender were together, from the hill home Vlster always had a little the best of No Surrender, who he led . by two nnd n hair lengths. Jncnrnndu tiring and pulling up fifteen lengths off, while Grafton Tot finished two hundred yards behind, and Sir John was pulled up, and did jiiot finish the course. The time, 5.3, was fairly good. This was the aged Ulster's first win after many starts in public, and he has been broken down, and patched up more than once. It i.s a coincidence that his younger half-brother ami he were first, and second fancies, ami tilled the positions the public had assigned to them In their betting transactions at the machine. j The nice even field of ten went out for the Orakei Hurdle Rnce. Monopole being I made a little better favourite than Uarry- , owen, who moved a bit short in bis preliminary, Lochclla being third fancy, with •over fr.no more on his chance than Benzine, the winner. The running was taken up by Orpheum Gunwale. Signature and GarryOwen being the leaders past tne stand, jOtara tailing up in the rear. Konr furlongs I from home Benzlnr had joined Gunwale in 1 the lead, and then Gunwale fell two hurdles from home. Benzine won pretty J well all out by a length, Lochella. who had • come with a fair run. just failing to suptalu it. and as they neared the post he swerved • slightly outward. Signature was about two lengths off and Notahilitv seven or eight lengths further back. The winner is evidently pretty well, and this was his second success at the meeting, and his supporters got a fair price. i There were sixteen in the York Welter, and Alteration, on which H, Gray had the mount, was a rather better favourite than Bedford, and White Itlaze was next best supported, illurry Tp and Hineamaru carry- ' lug most of the others. It was a real good ! race home between a lot of the horses, but ; raddiniton Green. White Blaze. Killard and Fabriquettc were delayed through the first--1 named getting caught in the barrier, as rei lated above. Rockaeld was leading when . they puttied down from Hineamaru and Hurry Up. Turning for home. Alteration, ■who. at one stags of the proceedings was • nearly last, had worked his way to the front rank, and there took charge for tn« I remainder of the Journey, winning handily 1 by half a length from Meltchikofr. -the i biggest outsider in the Held, who put up n i good run down the straight, boating All . Talk, who was always handy, by a head ' but Hyilus. under the judge's box', put in a • run which landed him so close t!iat most , people in the stand made sure that he had , secured a more prominent position than fourth. Housewife, in the centre of the course, fifth, and Bedford sixth. The mile , was covered in the good time, for a winter , race and with the weight, of 1.43 1-5. which ' indicates that the going was excellent. This , marie the second hie win for the son of I Elevation and Ednam. who is by San Fran , from Maude, dam of Mahutonga, and daughter of the Musket mare Hilda. He is ' a good welter horse, and staving appears i to be his forte. There were six starters for the Winter i Steeplechase, tiie betting being well distri- . "outed between Waimai, Troublesome and Master Lupin, Tenacious, Arlington and Bore being little fancied. A pretty race it proved. Arlington led at the first fence, the sod wall, and then Waimai jumped past > him and took charge, being, however, only ! just clear of Tenacious and Master Lupiii as they jumped the water, with Arlington. Troublesome and Itore close up. That was 1 the order to the back. Going up the hill, ; Waimai led Arlington and the others, nil close together, over the double, at tne ' second of which Bore fell. Waimn, ; -Master Lupin. Tenacious, Troublesome was I the order coming down the hill, and on the , flat and at the double Wniuiai led Tenacious ' and Master Lupin, with Troublesome handy. i and joined Waimai as they went out on to the back stretch, and, with Master Lupin. ■ the trio drew out, but going up the hill Master Lupin and Waimai were together, i clear of Troublesome, and Henderson was content to let them lead his mount over and then set sail and caught them ' before rearjbing the sod-capped stone wall : entering the course, and was leading Waimai at the last hurdle sUghtly. when the . last-named ran down the hurdle', and. falling to rise sufficiently, fell, interfering with 1 Master Lupin, who lost some around ' Troublesome, going on. won by five lengths I from Master Lupin. Tenacious, twenty- I 'five lengths off, third. Waimai. remounted . ridden in by a bystander, fourth. Arling- i ton stopped at the sod wall. The failing of uaimai spoilt a tine race, but Troublesome ! looked like the winner when the accident happened. The tin mc, Oui Ds. is fast for that particular distance. Kaan, rider of Bore, was unhurt, bur Tutehen was severely I shaken, and could not ride in file next race his place on Kauri King belug taken by MeSeveney. Six saddled up for the Campbell Hurdle Race, including the broken-down Sir Fisher, who was patched up for the event. The most support came for Kauri King and Dittt- who were very equally backed, the first-named carrying just on to £1000 more than Thrace. Muuster went out to the front as he did in the Century Hurdles at Wancanui. and led at his best pace, opening up a great gap, which was ouly reduced after the first seven furiongs had been run, but Munster was only caught by Ditto after nine furlongs had been traversed, and I then they ran along side by side, but the > mare drew away from him, lollowed by 1 Thrace and Kauri Kujg into tlie straight.

The top weight came on and was nearly on terms with Ditto at the last fence, aud beat her home by three parts of a length, Kauri King being nearly four lengths off third, and Te Onga, who was running In second place for a short distance fourth, the race being run in 3.40, the same time »s the Remuera HurdU Race was run In by the same horse, who now ranked not only as a double big race winner of the meeting, but had secured money to his credit in the Great Northern Hurdle Race. For a like event his admirers would strongly fancy him if it were run this week on the same conditions. Kauri King was Great Northern Hurdle Race, would probably advance his prospects not a little for future events. lie looked particularly well, however. Thrace, son of Poisedon. like li's sire, is a genuine stayer. Sir Fisher, it Is to be regretted, was a starter, ns though he finished he was badly broken down again, and it will be a year before he is likely to race again if ever. There were fourteen starters for the Visitors' Handicap, Rekanni being made a much better favourite than Madam Ristorl, with Post Haste and Carlysian coining after a big drop. Sea Sprite, who made his first appearance, like Madam Ristorl, with Canzonet and Kilneggau, was in the lead early. The last named was displaced before getting fur into the straight, but Madam Rlstori came on nnd won by three parts of a length from Ohlnewalrua, who was finishing on and beat Canzonet by a head for second place, Gatherer being the next to finish. The Fltzroy Welter Handicap. with twenty-one runners, was the concluding event of the day. and a decided run was made upon General Stephen. Scottish Knight, and Pierrot, while Rangl Aroba had also a very strong following, and after her any of the runners would have returned beyond the limit. The winner turned up in the little fnncipri Taina-a-Roa, on which gelding 11. Goldfinch made play, find keeping to the rails landed his mount liome a winner by three parts of a length from Scottish Knight, which was less than that ahead of Mountain Cold, which ran better than on Hip second day when much "'ore fancied. r.liu-tim was fourth and Hessian fourth.
