CRITICISM OF DEPARTMENT.

A report dealt with by the Thames Valley Drainage Reference Board relating to its connection with the Public Works Department, stated that it would lie necessary to obtain a wider mandate than that of the Department if work allowed under the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Improvement Act was to be completed. The committee recommended the Board to continue in existence to re-open the whole question next session of Pa/liament. the feeling being that it link up with other districts suffering similarly from the administrative methods of the Department, an inquiry into whose workers, with a view to running on up-to-date lines, was also recommended.

As the settlers on the eastern side of tiie Waibou bad withdrawn opposition it was decided to request the Tublic Works Department to consent to the Lands Department constructing the short stopbank required by Awaiti settlers. The Waihou-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company having ceased operations the Department was urged to have the cut made at Pertniki's Bend without further delay.
