REMUERA AND THE CITY.

TERMS OF AMALGAJHATIOir. CRITICISED BY RATEPAYERS. A meeting of the Reniuera Ratepayers' Association was held on Vriday evening, over which Mr T. M. Baxter presided. The Kemuera streets formed the subject of considerable criticism, a number of speakers declaring that the streets had deteriorated j-ince the district joined the city. It was stated that the council had failed to carry out the terms of amalgamation, particularly in regard to the promise of a poll for a loan for street improvements. The main complaint was that in some cases the rates had been nearly doubled since joining the city, and that, it was claimed, in streets which had received very little expenditure. The expenditure of L'iOOO on Vincent Road for the benefit of the racing community was a subject of comment, also the absence of a defined policy to provide baths and breathing spaces as had been done in Parnell when that borough united with the city. A motion was curried to Mie effect that the a?*ociation was of the opinion that the council had broken faith with the peuple of Remuera by evading its duty under paragraph 0 of the amalgamation agreement to take a poll for all the streets throughout the district, and that the association protested also against the excuse by the council that the rewnt po!i for improvements to six streets should He sufficient to discharge its obligation in respect of 41 streets, which, it was -tateJ, wore in a disgracefully neglected condition.

Members of the City Council representing the Remuera district were also criticised for the statements mado at the last meeting of the council that Remuera had 'been well treated in regard to the streets. The meeting generally disagreed with the statements of the members, and expressed regret that they had failed to take any action to have the terms of the amalgamation carried out, a resolution being carried on these line-.

It was further decided to obtain legal advice as to the rights of the Remuera ratepayers under the terms of the

amalgamation.
