STATEMENT BY C-INISTER.

The Minister for Railways (Hon. W. Herries), when visiting the Matamata interviewed by deputations on various local matters, and in answer to a question in connection with reduction of railway fares, stated that the whole system of fares and rates was being inquired into, and _muld be altered entirely, though he could hardly hold any great hope that the two 10 per cent, increases which had been put on to meet war conditions would be taken off. All depended on the answer he would ha.ye to give to railway servants in the middle of April regarding the increase of their salaries.

When asked by the Auckland "Star" representative would he make a statement in connection with serious shortage of railway trucks in Auckland district, the Minister declined, sayin<-- he was not in possession of the facts and figures of the apparent shortage
