CHRISTMAS GIFTS.

- - - — i I The packing of tlio Christmas gifts for Uhe soldiers took place ,in the eupper'room of the- Town Hall on Wednesday | morning. The scene was one of conlinu- j lons activity. Every table held its full j quota of workers, and many visitors j from the suburban Leagues, as well us a hundred delegates from the country,] were present. The work wont through with the usual celerity from the time it started at ton o'clock to twelve, when | nearly all the 7000 parcels wore in their oases* Then- were ten articles in every 'parcel, and each contained either tobacco or cigarettes, a pair of hand-knitted socks, handkerchiefs, plum puddings. I potted meats, coffee and milk, and cocoa and milk, butter, cheese, towels, and with racji a photo of Auckland, with a sprig of manuka neatly tied in the corner to remind the soldier of the hills of home. The nurses on active service wore not forgotten, ami 170 parcels were packed in cases labelled "New Zealand Nurses." These parcels contained a towel, handkerchief, Amco, butter milk, honey, potted moat, sweets, and a photo of the. city with a little bit of manuka. The splendid response made to the call for handknitted socks wus frrtiitly appreciated. and enabled one pair to be put in nearly every pan-el. Tamnki West sent in their parcels, all ready packed to the number ,of a hundred, and Xorthcote did the fame thing to the number of 85. which . lightened the labours of the local packing committee considerably.
