SOCIAL JOTTINGS. j ' I Dr. and Mrß. C. Coldicutt have gone for a holiday tour iv the South Sea Islands. j Mrs. A. Hardy, of Auckland, is visiting relatives in Christchurch. I Mrs. W. S. Bean, of Addington, Christchurch, and her mother, Mrs. Seddon, ■widow of the late Right Hon. Richard Seddon, are spending a holiday in Auck-, land. The Croquet Association's Red Cross tournament, which took place on three lawns, Remuera, Mt. Hobson, and the Carlton grounds, was very successful. The A class for doubles was won by Mesdames McLoughlin and Squirrel, who defeated Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Brown. The either ball match was won by Airs. Oldham, of Remuera, who defeated Mrs. Lowe, of Devonport. A grade singles were won by Mrs. Evitt, of Onehunga, who defeated Mrs. Harbutt, of Mount Hobson. In the B grade doubles Mrs. Black and Mrs. Blenkhisop defeated Mrs. Packwood and Mrs. Middleton in tho final. The singles were won by Mrs. Finch, who beat Mrs. Perry, the same lady winning the either ball match from Mrs. Cowan. Mrs. Walter Woodward, Colombo Street, North Christchurch, is visiting Auckland. Mrs. Sydney Thome George and Mrs. Edwin Morton (Auckland) stopped in Christchurch on their return from Mt. Cook. Mrs. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Mr. and Mrs. W. Mac Donald, Miss Mac Donald, and Miss Brice, who have been spending a few days in town, left to-day for Mt. Cook. Mr and Mrs. G. R. Bloomfield and Mrs. J. Lucas Bloomfield, of Auckland, have gone to the Coast, after a few days' stay in Christchurch. Mrs Leon Wilkie, of Wanganui, passed through Auckland this week on her way north. Mrß W. Watson, wife of Captain Watson, was staying at the Grand during last week, awaiting the return of her husband, who landed from one of the transports. Captain and Mrs. Faris, also of Wellington, were at the Grand.

Mrs. Williamson, of Gieborne, who! hne been etaying at the Grand, lias returned home in company with her father. Mr. K. M. I Mrs Hope Lewis returned to Wellington last week from a lengthy stay in Rotorua. Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool has been made "Dame Grand Cross" of the Order of the British Empire by His Majesty the King. As soon as the announcement of the outbreak of war reached New Zealand her : Excellency took jitcps to form an organisation of women to work for the comfort and well-being of our troops. | Among other awards are those of Mrs. W. F. Massey, Lady Ward, and Mrs. J. P. Luke (the Wellington Mayoress) who have been made "Commanders" of the Order (Third Class). That Mrs. Massey hns shared in the honours will be a cause of congratulation to her many friends. Her interest in patriotic work has been sustained, and in one par- . ticular branch of her energies—that of the Soldiers' Club in Sydney Street, Wellington, in which she has taken a very lively and special interest, and of , which she is president —her efforts have been very widely appreciated, as thousands of soldiers who have passed through the camps and have been frequenters of the club have testified.
