RED CROSS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the joint committee of the British Rod Cross and the Order of St. John was held to-day, the Mayor (Mr. J. 11. Gunson) presiding. It was reported that new branches had been set up at Kaiwaka, Tare, and Mnngawhai. FINANCE. It was decided that the sum of £ 15,000 bo cabled Home. Tho chairman explained that would leave aibout £3,500 in hand to go on with. The sending of £15,000 was rendered possible owing to the £12,000 that had beon handed over by the Citizens' Committee. SUPPLIES FOR HOSPITALS. A letter was received from Wellington containing a copy of a cable forwarded to the Governor-General from London asking for cortain supplies to be sent to the Now Zonlnnd hospitals in England. A discussion followed upon tho question as to whether the articles asked for could not bo more cheaply supplied by purchase in the Old Country. Sirs. Buckleton urged that they ehould keep up the supplies to Mesopotamia, as there was a greater danger of shortage there than in England. Miss Murray said thirty cases of goods were ready now to go to 'Mesopotamia, The chairman said they ehould take it for granted that those artiolee would not have been asked for from England unless they were required for tho New Zealand hospitals. Miss Murray said it seemed ridiculous to send soap and pillows to London. Mr. Wilson said soap was twice ns cheap in New Zealand as it wae in Great Britain, but if any goods could bo purchased cheaper at Home they should be got there. Ultimately Messrs. Wilson. Robertson and Mnckay were appointod a committee to inquire and act in conjunction with the Depot Committee.
