THE LABOUR CONFERENCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir—l notice in the Auckland Press of the Kith inst. that certain prominent representatives of Labour in Auckland propose convening a meeting of delegates of all unions in the Auckland district, such meeting to take place at the end of this month. The objects of this meeting, the uniting of labour economically and politically. This effort will by no means be unique in the history of the Labour movement of "God's Own" (New Zealand). All former efforts have ended in rank failure. Those that were even partially successful were so in spite, of prominent leaders, not because of them. The reason of the downfall of "try outs" of the working class to better their working and social conditions is quite plain to all intelligent observers. It was the selfish, ambitious actions of leaders. If this forthcoming effort is not to be one more bitter experience added to the already numberless ones of the past, then the rank and file of the working class will have to be much more keen and wideawake than formerly.—l am. etc., VIGILANCE. Kawakaiwa, June IT, 1917.
