WARKWORTH COTTAGE HOSPITAL.

— ■ INSTITUTION FORMALLY OPENED. The new cottage hospital at Warkworth was officially opened on Monday, Messrs. M. J. Coyle (chairman), W. Wallace, J. G. Rutherford, Geo. Knight, and F. Dye. of the Auckland Hospital Board, being present at the ceremony. There was a large attendance of residents of the district, including representatives of the local Town Board, Road Board, j. id County Council. In making the opening address. Mr. M. J. Coyle stated thai, the old hospital building had b' 4 cn' shifted and modernised, and a new wing added, at a cost of £(550, in order to provide the district with an auxiliary hospital suitable for sick, accident, and maternity cases. While the Board maintained that the best results were obtained by a fully staffed and modernly equipped central hospital, it recognised the difficulties which .beset country people in districts where the population was scattered and the means of transit of patients were most difficult and inadequate. It also rcsognised the importance of the early and adequate treatment of maternity cases and of the presence of a district nurse in country areas.. Consequently the Board had incurred the expense of the hospital to assist the district, and had subsidised the salary of a district nurse, with the result that Wnrkworth now bad the ■institute they -were opening, and a particularly competent manager in Nurse Beetbam. wbo was a certificated nurse of experience and training in both general and maternity cases. One condition of the assistance given, however, was that indigent persons were to have first consideration. Mr. F. Dye. as the district's representative on the Hospital Board, also spoke a few words of congratulation to the residents on the completion of an institution that would do much to relieve acute oases of sickness and suffering. He pointed out the hospital was on an excellent central site of 10$ acres, and that it might be expected in future years to become a large institution as the population and needs of the district increased.
