SETTLERS' ENORMOUS LOSSES.
NO LOSS OF LIFE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, this day. Colder weather prevailed to-day, and the sun was shining brightly. The flood waters are rapidly receding. Settlers in the flooded areas have suffered enormous losses, but the full extent is not ascertainable until they are able to return to their properties. By good luck there has been no loss of life, though many people had very narrow escapes. Tlie losses of stock are the worst in Omahu, Pakowhai, Meanee, and Taradale districts.
Messrs. Richmond and Fernie estimate their Joss at 4,000 sheep and 50 fat cattle; Mr. Pointon (Meanee), 550 sheep, nine bullocks, eight horses, and all his cows; Messrs. Keith ami Cotterell, 700 sheep; Mr. J. S. McLeod (Omahu), 200 sheep. Mr. F. Rhodes is reported to have lost (between 2.000 and 3,000 sheep. This statement of a few losses will indicate how serious the flood has been to fanners in closely-settled districts. A well known stock agent estimates the total loss in sheep at between 10,000 and 12.000.
, The small washouts on the railway line are being repaired, and it is possible that the Wellington express will get through to Napier to-night.
