ROLL OF HONOUR.

CORPORAL DOIDOE. Some time ago news came to hand of the death of Corporal Edwin Bailey (Jack) Doidge. an Auckland journalist, and previously of CootamundTa, New Soutli Wales. Corporal Doidffe' sailed with the Srh Reinforcements. Xew Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was wounded in the back by shrapnel, but recovered, and returned to the firingline. He was later reported as missing and 'believed to be killed, but the hope that he was perhaps still alive has been dispelled by a later report, which states that he was killed in action. Corporal Boidge was the youngest son of K. Doidge. a journalist of Xew South Wales. The following letter to his mother from an officer describes the fight i.i which CorpoTal Doidge was killed:— "February 28, 1917, — Dear Madame, —As one of Corporal Doidge's officers it is my painful duty to convey to you the sad news that Jack is reported missing and believed killed. From what our officer. Captain King, told mc on his return to our front line. I cannot even offer you any hope of his having been captured alive. We were reassembling in our ffwn front line, after a successful raid on the enemy. Oaptain Kiiig. on his return, told ine that he was with Corporal IJoidge when he was killed instantaneously by a bomb in the enemy front line. Captain King killed his assailant in return with another bomb. Just after our captain had finished speaking to mc he was killed by a shell, and accordingly that is the only evidence the authorities have with regard to Jack's fate. Jack was a tine soldier and a splendid N.C.O He was highly respected by men and officers alike. l , accept on our behalf our united sincerest sympathy.— Yours, very truly. Tim Johnson, Second-Lieutenant. ,,
