STRATHDENE SUNK WITHOUT WARNING.
DELIBERATE BREACH OF PROMISE TO AMERICA. WAVE OF ANGER SPREADING THROUGHOUT U.S.A. (Received 9.25 a.m.) WASHTXGTOX, October JO. Simultaneously with the announcement that the State Department coneiders ell Germany's promises to the United States regarding submarines unbroken as yet, the British steamer Strathdcne -was attacked without warning. Captain Wilson, master of the Strathdene, is positive that his vessel was not warned. The owners of the Dutch liner Bloomersdik are amazed at the sinking, as the ship did not carry contraband and flew the Dutch flag. The British Embassy is silent, and Mr. Robert Lansing, Secretary of State, has gone to meet President Wilson to confer on the situation. Notwithstanding official reticence a wave of indignation and anger is spreading throughout America about the raids. The population of Newport, where the rescued were brought, was stirred to a remarkable extent at the submarine s -wanton attacks. There is no news of the present location of the submarine. The captain of the Stephano insists that he saw a large vessel alongside the submarine, which he is certain is a supply ship.
