ENEMY'S COUNTER-ATTACKS SEVERELY REPULSED.
GREAT ACTIVITY SOUTH OF THE SOMWE.
LONDON, October 6. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—"Two enemy counter-attacks -were made in the Thiepval area. The enemy wae severely handled, and was repulsed.
"Between July 1 and September 30, we captured 29 heavy guns and heavy howitzers, 92 field guns and field howitzers, 103 trench artillery pieces and 397 machine-guns.' "We discharged gas eastward of Loos and Armentieres, and-made three successful raids at Loos and two at Arras."
A French communique states: —"North of the Somme we continued to make progress east of Morval. We repulsed a strong counter-attack on our new trenches north of Frcgicourt. "The enemy artillery has been very active south cf the Sommc. "Our heavy guns in the Woevre shelled the military station at St. Beuoit, where much movement has been reported. A great fire was caused."
