CITY-COUNCIL.

THE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held >last night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr; J. H. Gunson), Miss Melville, Messrs. A. J. Entrican, Maurice Casey, F. J. BTlnsden, 3. Burton, J. W. Holdsworth, G. W. Murray, S. M. Moore-Jones, J. Dempsey, E. Davles, G. BaiWon, P. J. Nerheny, 3. Trevlthlck, K. T. Michaels, E. J. Carr, IP. McElwaln, H.*N. Bagnall, P. M. Macka.v, and A. Hall Skelton. I HOW TO MAKE ROADS. In "response to a request from Councillor Davis, the Works- Committee recommended that permanent work be done in Lower Jermyn Street and Emily Place, at a cost of £700. Councillor Davis complained that the Information given was no answer to his question. He also suggested that the Council's foremen should be properly instructed how to make roads. Foremen should be appointed to be responsible for special sections of the city, and he would suggest that a school be established for I the instruction of foremen. I Councillor Nerheny: Will you tell us how to make them? '' i Councillor Davis: I will do that later. I The recommendation was adopted. I DRAINING REMTJEEA. In reply Tto a private request for an additional drainage connection, the City Engineer stated that the work done by the City Council to date in Remuera comprised O.oSSft of egg-shaped sewer, 22iin by 151n diameter, and that the work had been continned in a southerly direction with a 15in pipe for a distance of 500 ft, from which point' It would be continued under Remuera Road to drain No. 6 area, comprising that portion of Remnera lying south of Remuera Road and east of Ladies' Mile, and that the sewer being practically wholly In the tunnel, he was proposing to make it 4ft by 2ft Sin, egg-sbaped. The length in the tunnel would be LSOoft. The cost of the [work to date had been £6,133, of which £1,15S was charged to the Remnera drainage loan, the balance of £4,075 having | been charged to the new Remuera drainage loan of 1915. He estimated the cost of completing the tunnel portion to be not less than £4,100, and the cost of the work yet to be done to provide for the drainage of the Lucerne Estate to be £4,528. Mr. jßush stated that the estimated cost of carrying out the drainage of areas 5 and 6, exclusive of the Lucerne Estate, was given ,by him as £20.000 In his report of May 10, 11915, but he now anticipated that the cost of carrying out the work would be little less than the £30,000 authorised by the loan.

The Works Committee recommended that the City Engineer proceed with the tunnel sewer by day labour, and with the drainage work on the Lucerne Estate, in accordance with his recommendations. The report was adopted. PROPOSED CREMATORIUM. The Mayor stated that the Hon. Minister of Public Health had called on the Ist inst., and suggested that the Council should erect a crematorium at Waikumete. His reasons and the view 3 of the Department generally ou this point were explained, and his Worship would explain them to committee. The City Engineer, reporting on this matter, stated that at Synionds Street there was a small area which might possibly be utilised, but that it would be necessary to make a survey of the site, ***rtli a view to locating any existing graves, which might render the site too small for, the purpbsc. . At Waikumete there would be no difflcultv in finding a suitable site if that was considered near enough to town. In regard to the cost the Engineer said that the Wellington City Council spent £1,433, of which £563 was raised by pnblic subscription, but that owing to the price of material, this woa'd probably now be exceeded. He considered that £I.SOO would probably be sufficient for the undertaking. The committee recommended that no further action be taken until after th» war. This was agreed to. FOX -NEWMARKETS BENEFIT. In response to a request from the town clerk of Newmarket for the draining off of water flowing from the Domain into George Street, the City Engineer suggested a reply ,to the effect that the ground would •be kept under observation, and pointing out that nothing had been done to direct additional water on to the streets In Newmarket Borough, "which shared equally with the City in the enjoyment of the Domain without Incurring any liaibility whatever.** The matter was referred to the Works ■Committee. I THE LEYS INSTITUTE. The Leys Institute Committee reported the purchase of 25 volumes, the gift of 51 volumes from Mr T. TV. Leys, and the gift of three volumes from Mr J. B. Gilfillan. j A report was received from the president i (Mr Leys) .to the effect that the Institute had almost come to the end of its shelf room, and that this was being extended. KING'S D-RIT-E DRAINAGE.

The City Engineer reported that appli-1 cation bad .been made lor drainage facilities for a new warehouse being! erected iv King's Drive, Parnell. In order to provide these facilities, it would be 1 necessary to construct a storm-water sewer' 1300 ft, with a Oiu foul-water sewer' alongside it, from 'Sehryn Terrace to St. ■George's Bay Road, at a total cost for the two sewers 6f £1304. The Works Committee recommended that the undertaking he authorised, and this was agreed to. TRAMS FOR JERMYN STREET. With reference to the proposed Jermyn iStreet tramway extension, the Mayor said it would 'be necessary to formally request the Company to undertake .tnls work. The Works Committee recommended that the Tramways Company Jjc asked to Jay a tramway in Jermyn Street from Beach •Road to Symonds Street, such -work to foe done before the j>aving of the street is undertaken. The recommendation was adopted. I/EVELUN'G UP. Replying to a suggestion from Mr E. P. Black for the filling In of the dip behind Cargen Hotel, the City Engineer said that bis scheme did not allow for ailing in. The letter "was referred to the Works Committee. <•■
