POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr F. V. Fraser, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. One first offender was remanded till to-morrow for medical observation, and three were fined 5/ apiece. Edward Stephen McAnulty (44), who had qualified for a prohibition order by -getting drank three times in quick succession, was awarded the order of the prohibited and fined 20/.

I STRUCK UP A MATCH. Henry Naylor and Alexander Olesen admitted being the chief parties in a fight in Customs Street yesterday evening. It was explained that Naylor was the aggressor. He bad asked Olesen for a imatch, and on being refused had struck the other man, who returned the blows to the best of his ability. Naylor was fined 10/, and Olesen was convicted and discharged. EXCEEDED KXS PRIVILEGES.

Patrick Kavanagh (31) admitted that last night in Federal Street he assaulted Marion Wright.by striking her. I Senior-Sergeant Rutledge said that a cons-table heard an argument between a man and a woman about 9.40 p.m. I yesterday at the corner of Durham and Federai Streets. He beard the woman say "You've broken up my home," and start to go towards the man, who struck her a blow on the jaw, knocking her down. The constable arrested the man, and when the woman recovered she said Kavanagh had 'been living with her. Thomas Kelly (24), a Maori sailor, was charged that on Wednesday he stole 25/, the property of Mona HilL Mona Hill said thai sbe occupied a house in Federal Street and let rooms. On Wednesday evening accused called at her place, and was playing the aocordeon. , During the evening she was sick, and she I called accused to her room. After he bad gone she noticed that ber brooch, a greenstone one, was gone. In reply to the Bench, she declared that her sickness was not due to drink, and that she didn't touch drink.

Plainclothes Constable Lambert stated that on receiving the complaint of the alleged theft he went to a ship and saw tile Maori, who produced the brooch and said 'he had got it as security for £1 he had lent the woman, after having paid her other money for accommodation. He explained the circumstances under wihich he got the brooch. The constable remarked that the woman had valued the brooch at £30, and jewellers had value it variously at 7/6, 10/, and 25/. The woman also gave him the impression of having been drinking. Kelly, on oath, repeated the story, he had told the constable, and his Woiwhip, remarking that tine probabilities seemed more in favour of accused's story being true than that of the complainant, dismissed the charge, with a proviso that the woman should get her brooch back.
