THE PASSING PIONEERS.
MR. JAMES LOGAN. Another of the rast disappearing band of pioneers has passed away, in the person of the late Mr. James M. Logan, engineer, of Stanley Bay. At the trine of his ■ death, which occurred to-day, he was in his seventy-third year, and had been in the Dominion for about 55 years. He I first landed at Invercargill, but soon found his way up North, and, with the exception of one visit to Scotland, his native country, he spent the remainder of his life in the Auckland, province, where he did much early pioneering work. On his visit to the Homeland he got built, under his own supervision, a small steam launch, designed especially for the upper harbour trade. This.little vessel was brought to Wellington on one of the vessels trading to this country, and he performed the hazardous task of bringing her to Auckland by sea in rough weather in perfect safety after a long voyage, when many of his friends thought he was going to certain disaster. I This boat, which he named the Eclipse, sailed to Riverbead for a number of years. He was also the owner of the first steam -launch, named the -Alice, to run on Lake Rotorua. He got built in Auckland a small steamer called the Neptune, which he ran to Kaipara, and which later got wrecked down at Blenheim. He was also well known as- the engineer of the old.Rose Casey, and was for about a year engineer of the mission steamer the Southern Cross, a position his eldest son at present holds. Till be retired from the sea quite recently he had been in the Northern Company employ for about 23 'years. He bad a wide circle of friends, sad be was a man who was the soul of honour, being the type of old colonist who did good work for his adopted country in the early days. He leaves a wife, two daughters—Mrs. Watkins, of Opotiki, and Miss Alice Logan—and three sons-— John (engineer on the Southern Cross), Leo (of Macky, Logan's, Wellington), and Alex (a law clerk in Auckland r—t« mourn their loss. The funeral leaves for O'Neal's Point Cemetety on Sunday
