ATHLETICS.
A mile match for £10 between G. B. Tinder, the old world's champion, and K. Young. Kirknewton. who won a mile handicap at Powderhall ac far back as 1592, about which time Tinclcr came over to professionalism, running as Craig.. Inverness, was decided recently in England. The match arose through the men working at neighbouring mines to the nest of Edinburgh, and in this locality a lot of money was betted on the event. At the grounds odds of 7 to 2 were laid on Tincler, and this rate of odds was thoroughly justified on the running, Tincler cutting out the work from the 6tart, leading by a five-yard margin with two circuits covered, and finally winning practically as he liked.
There appears to be no finality in records. When J. E. Meredith, on the magnificent track at Stockholm, won the Olympic 800 metres race in 1.52 1-5, It might reasonably have been considered that the mark would stand for a good while. But Meredith himself hae gone one better, and that on the occasion of hie last race on the Pennsylvania track, for he goes down this term, and the only other meet in which he is booked to represent Pennsylvania is the intercollegiate sports. Running against Cornell on Franklin Field, Meredith reserved himself for the half-mile with the especial intention of having a go at record. Usually he has been on point-scoring intent, and has raced in all events up to the half. This time he left the 100, 220, and 440 aione— on time he would have had a chance in any of them—and with a foeman worthy of his steel in Windnagle, of Cornell, he had everything in his favour. The Cornell man had already run second in the 4.26 mile; but, to general surprise, he stuck to Meredith all the way, and in a great finish was only beaten two yarde in 1.52.
