THE WAIKATO WATERWAY.
UP-RIVER CARGO SERVICE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. The steamer Tawera, towing two large barges heavily laden with benzine and other goods, berthed at the new wharf at Hamilton this morning. A large portion of the cargo is for Te Awamutu and many ton? for Cambridge. The goods were transhipped from the s.s. Albatross at Port Waikato early this week, where the steamer Wallsend, from Sydney, also berthed. The captains of both vessels say that they experienced no difficulty in negotiating the sand bar. Capt. Rule, of the Wallsend, who is a stranger to these shores, entered under full steam without assistance, steering only by the newly-prepared chart, the vessel drawing seventeen feet of water. The re-Survey of the harbour is now completed, and beacons have been fixed. The Wallsend is taking a cargo of timber to Sydney, while the Albatross will return from Onehunga next week with the balance of the cargo which she had to leave behind. The of this will be transhipped at Hamilton for Rotorua. Negotiations are proceeding for the Wallsend to bring 3,000 tons of phosphatee for Hamilton direct from Sydney on her next voyage.
