SHAKESPEAREAN NTGHT.. The gymnasium at Leys Institute was " last evening when the 'Pon- ' , Shak.esDe.a.Te and--. Rhetoric ' Cliib gave a fine entertainment in connection • with the -winter course. Tbo president (Mr. T. W. Leys) said he had been aSked by Sir Joseph Ward to again \ apologise for that gentleman not icing able to come to Auckland and give his lecture, owing to the debate on the Finance Bill. Mr. Leys expressed his thanks to Professor Maxwell Walker and the members of the club for pro- ' viding the programme for that evening. "Scenes and Songs from Shakespeare" •was the title of the programme, and the items were Tcell chosen, being from "As You Like It," "The Merchant of Venice, ,, "Hamlet," "Julius Caesar," and "The Taming of the Shrew/ Those taking part were: Messrs. E. T. Hart, ■who represented Duke Senior, Old Gobbo, Polonius, and Baptista; Professor Walker Jaqnes, Hamlet, and Petruchio; Mr. W. H. Graham, Orlando, the King, Brutus, and Hortensio; Mr. G. H. Hardey, Amiens; Launcelot, Laertes, and Gremio; Mr. L. Gardner," Adam, Cassius, -and Tranio. Miss Eaeie Holland ' was most natural as Katharina, in "The Taming of the Shrew," and also Tead the ; part at the Queen in "Hamlet," and Miss Ivy Squirrell represented Ophelia and 1 Bianca, for both of which characters she was well fitted. The musical items weTc of exceptional merit. Miss Laura Waficer was encored 1 for her song "Orpheus and His Lute." 1 Air. Evan AlcOormick sang "Who Is ; Sylvia?" very effectrvcry, and Mr. L. •Echlin's rendering of "'Blow! Blow! ! Thou Winter Wind" was admirable. 1 The accompaniments were played by Miss Essie Holland. Professor Walker, on behalf of the ; club, tendered thanks to the vocalists for their contributions to the evening's ' entertainment.
