HERO OF THE HOUR.

MR HUGHES BECOMES A HOUSEHOLD WORD. CLAIMED FOR THE EMPIRE. LONDON, March 22. The Premier of Australia (Mr. VV. M. Hughes) was to-day sworn in as a Privy Councillor at Buckingham Palace. There was an unprecedented scene outside the palace. Motor omnibuses and charabancs brought wonnded Australian soldiers from nine hospitals. The Princess Royal, the Duchess of Teck, and other Royal personages presided at the tea tables. Colonel Sam Hughes (Canadian Minister for Defence), who is visiting London, states that he is entirely in accord with his Australian namesake's outspoken views on-the subject of post-war trade. Regarding the coming conference in Paris the "Morning Post" says: "Mr. Hughes has a duty to something greater than Australia, namely, the Empire. He should stay in England at present." The "Daily Mail" protests«against Mr. Bunciman going to the Paris conference as the principal • British representative. It suggests Mr. Hughes. The "Times" says: "Mr. Hughes is here, and the Canadian Prime Minister is coming. Parliament should' press for an. immediate Imperial Conference. We would'then be in a position to act with our allies and. deal with our enemies."
