MILITARY SERVICE.

BRINGING REGISTRATIONS UP TO DATE. The attention of those of the responsible ages is drawn to the fact that an order issued last month by the Minister of Defence proclaimed that all male persons in the Dominion between the ages of 14 and 26 who were not registered under the Befcnce Act were required to do so before March 31, 1910. The authorities in the South have apparently been experiencing some difficulty in enrolling boys of 14 years and over wiio previously received military instruction in the school cadets, but who, since the lapse of that system, arc now required to be re-enrolled. While the school cadet system was in vogue the officers responsible for the enrolling of lads in the senioh «adets upon their becoming liable for training in this branch had only to refer to the school rolls, but now the boys are scattered far and wide, and the officials have the heavy burden thrown upon their shoulders of having to hunt down all those above the age of 14 years who arc still unregistered. The police, however,' have received instructions to hunt up the dilatory lads who have not yet reported in response to the Minister's order. It may also be mentioned that' all male persons now liable who, through, temporary absence from New Zealand have not previously been registered, must do so within two months of their, Tcturn. All male immigrants between the ages of 14 and 20 arc required to register within six months of their arrival in the Dominion. The -penalty for failure to register is £3.
