IMPROVING VINCENT ROAD.

ENGINEERS' VARIED VIEWS. Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., was occupied the whole of yesterday as a Royal Commission, taking evidence re theproposa' of the City Council to straighten andi divert Vincent Road, Rcniuera. I Mr. J. Stanton appeared for the City 1 Council, .Mr. A. Hanna for .Mrs. Cotter, and Mr. M. H. Wynyard for Mrs.: Pritt. The following witnesses gave evidence yesterday afternoon: — Lockie Gannon, C.E., stated- he had carried out road works to the extent ot' i' 100,001) during the last four years. He considered more, was required than Peking off the corner of Mrs. Pritt's property at Vincent Road. He submitted i a scheme to take approximately 00 fceti off Airs. Tritt's frontage. His scheme I involved a radical alteration in the road,! but his angle was easier than the others I suggested. He would not call the | scheme submitted by Mr. Bush not a good plan for dealing with the problem.; His objections to it was that it took j too much land from one person. Taking j a small slice from four persons was! preferable to a big slice from one person. ln answer to Mr. Kettle witness said he considered Mr. Bush's scheme was an undue hardship to Mrs. Cotter. Mr. Stanton then intimated he wished to call rebutting evidence. W. 11. Hamer, Engineer to Auckland Harbour Board, stated there was only one possible scheme for Vincent Road —that was to straighten it on its present line. He recommended the exact line as that proposed by the City Engineer. He did not consider the other schemes worth a moment's thought. He considered the scheme submitted by Mr. Bush a reasonable one, and causing no undue hardship. W. E. Bush, City Engineer, was recalled, and put in minutes of the Works Committee re Vincent Road improvements. J. J. Walklate, manager of the Auckland Electric Tramway Company, and duly qualified civil engineer, stated that the" plan submitted by Mr. Bush would make an excellent improvement to Vincent Road. He considered the scheme a reasonable and proper one. He considered Vincent Road dangerous in its present state. The further hearing was adjoined until next Thursday morning.
