THE GRADING OF TEACHERS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l heartily agree with ''Hori" in wishing for the publication of the teachers' grading lists. As a country teacber Jof some years' experience, I "recognise I that tiie present grading scheme ol the ! Auckland Board is far from even j satisfactory. The lucrative positions of I the town are looked on as the special property of the town teacher, who, free I from Uie troubles which we in the country have to endure, and more lv touc.'i j with the educational world, receive j than their due in marks when comIJmred with the country teaeliex, who has so many obstacles in the way of liw making a satisfactory show for the efforts expended. These difficulties aro not considered by mspectom, but \\u have to wait till we apply for a town position to Jearn it. 'llien. again, too much credit is given to training college experience, which, after all, id of a verydoubtful nature. I have known of cases where young ex-students receiveJ as their first position schools for which experienced teachers should have had the chance to apply. The college appointments are. of courae, made on the recommendation of the Principal, who cannot assess the comparative values cf Ktudente and of teachers whom he has never seen. When the liste are published all teachers will know their comparative values, and 1 venture to say that then, and not till then, will moilfairness in the awarding ol" marks be shown. ]t its the grading of the teacher, not the grading ot the position, which .s desired, but at the present it is vice versa. Welcome, publicity! secrecy begone.—l am, etc., SINCERITY.
